Dear Diary, by Emelia

March 17th, 2017

Dear Diary,

The hot burning summer sun was flying over my head making me feel dizzy and stupid .It was boring so I considered peeping into my sister’s book, and boy was I wrong! I mean who reads a book with no pictures or conversations? Minuets went by and I saw the most unusual thing; a rabbit not just any rabbit, he had pink eyes a waistcoat and out popped a little stopwatch! He blurted “I’m late I’m late “In shock I ran as fast as I could until: a large black whole appeared.  No hesitation needed the white rabbit hopped down it and after it I came.

The rabbit was not within sight but lovely wild flowers and vast green plants sprouted from the ground. This wasn’t our world, was it? Smoke poured out of some leaves. Oh and of course this was abit weird but I went with it

We also talked about making sure that our question wasn’t too wide. For example, asking what is your favourite dessert rather than your favourite food.

What question would you ask?

Show not tell sentences

November 2nd, 2016

This week in literacy we are going to be looking at show not tell sentences.

Show not tell sentences make your writing much more interesting to your reader as a setting, scene or characters emotions is described to the reader rather than simply written.

We are going to use the clip ‘Catch a Lot’ below to help us. The animation is about a fisherman who is trying to teach his son their family tradition.

Can you tell how the father and son are feeling at different parts of the story? How can you tell? Use the detail of their actions, expressions and body language to help you write your sentence and show the reader, rather than telling them that they were determined, bored, angry, scared or frustrated.

For example, instead of writing;

The boy was bored.

You could write;

The boy sighed heavily. Resting his arms on the oars of the boat, he stared back towards the harbour.

Can you share one of your sentences in the comments box?
